Carlyle Sailing Association

What is CSA?

Founded in 1971, Carlyle Sailing Association is a not-for-profit sailing organization located just an hour east of Saint Louis, Missouri, on Carlyle Lake in Southern Illinois. With some of the finest sailing facilities in Midwest, we are a friendly, family-oriented, volunteer association dedicated to the sport of sailing. CSA has a number of active one-design fleets, as well as boats for rent. We have events year-round, including weekly races, regattas, parties, and sailing lessons.

Our harbor is situated on Carlyle Lake: a 26,000 acre, man-made lake; approximately 8 miles long and 3 miles wide. It is the largest lake in Illinois and enjoys a well-deserved reputation as one of the best sailing lakes in the Midwest and the Saint Louis area.

We are a friendly, family-oriented, volunteer association dedicated to the sport of sailing. Whether you're into competitive racing or just chilling out, CSA offers something for everyone!

  • It’s calming and serene. It’s an escape from the rigors of daily life.

This program is for young sailors of all abilities ages 8-15. There will be 6 Saturday Sessions 10:00 am to 4:00 pm rain or shine. During the Whale of a Sail (Saturday September 14 and Sunday September 15) the Juniors compete with their peers in the event on a separate race course set safely away from the big boats.

Students will meet each morning in the Junior Classroom, (lower level OB). Students will learn to solo sail in the simple, stable, designed Optimist Pram and will also have the opportunity to sail the more high-performance O'pen Skiff. Instructions will include information from the REACH program, introduce boat rigging, recreational sailing, and safe boating practices. This year our sailboat fleet has expanded to include the popular Sunfish class and the Hobie Wave catamaran as well as access to big boats from the CSA rental fleet.

Students who own their own boats, Lasers and Sunfish are encouraged to participate in the education and on-the-water exercises. Instructions will include beginner level to advanced racing for those who desire to travel and compete in regattas.

This Clinic uses the information, videos, files and resources found in the Canvas Online Learning Management System; course titled "CSA Laser Instruction." I recommend you login and review this material before you attend the Laser clinic. I will be using terms and techniques explained in the course that would take too much time to explain during the clinic and would limit the ability to cover all the material for the clinic!

Students self-enroll in the course with this URL:
